GAME RULES

ALL LEAGUES - In general, rules as stated in the AUWP Official Wallyball Rulebook will apply. A copy of the Rulebook is on display at the Wallyboard.  Also on the AUWP web site.

The following additional rules supersede the Official Wallyball Rules:

The referee will track and report the service rotation to each team prior to each change in server.

Any ball hit by an offensive team on their third hit which goes over the net, hits the opponents side wall and returns back over above the net to the offensive team's side without being touched by the defensive team shall be a side out. If any ball hit by an offensive team on their third hit which goes over the net, hits the opponents side wall and returns back on the offensive side and goes under the net, it is a point to the offensive team.

ALL LEAGUES - Open, Advanced, Intermediate level players are eligible to participate in these leagues. (See LEVELS OF PLAY.)

TEAM LEAGUES - Each team will play one match per week. Each Round Robin match will consist of three games to "18" points. A team must win by two points. Playoff games will consist of the best two out of three games.  Teams may not be scheduled to play every week and may have a bye based on the number of teams competing in that league.

DRAW LEAGUES - Players will enter as individuals and, through the luck of the draw, each player will be matched up with two other players to form a team each week. Each coed team will have a minimum of one woman, and up to two men, on the court.

Each week a schedule will be posted for the following week.

Each team will play one match per week. Each match will consist of three games to "18" points. A team must win by two points.

LEVELS OF PLAY

The following "general" definitions are presented in an effort to assist players in determining which league to join.

Open level players are experienced wallyball players. They have demonstrated their knowledge of the rules and their ability to handle the ball properly. These players are proficient in player positioning, offensive and defensive strategies, and they play the game with an exceptionally high degree of skill. These players are consistent in their play.

Advanced level players are experienced Wallyball players. They have demonstrated their knowledge of the rules and their ability to handle the ball properly. These players are familiar with player positioning along with offensive and defensive strategies, and they play the game with a high degree of skill.

Intermediate players have demonstrated the ability to play the game according to the rules. These players know how to handle the ball properly, however they often are inconsistent. These players are beginning to practice offensive and defensive strategies and player positioning.

PLAYER SCORING

DRAW LEAGUE - Each player will be awarded 1 point for each game won. [For instance, if team "A" were to defeat team "B" 2 games to 1, each player of team "A" would receive 2 points for the evening and each player of team "B" would receive 1 point for the evening.]

If a substitute is used for a player, the player will receive 1/2 credit for each game won. The substitute plays for free. While men and women will be competing together on the court, men will compete with men and women will compete with women for the purposes of awards.

PLAYOFFS

REFEREES/SCOREKEEPERS

ALL LEAGUES - Refereeing/Scorekeeping is the responsibility of the entire team when scheduled. One team member should keep score and run the game. The other team member(s) are responsible for calling game and ball handling fouls.

All game and ball handling fouls are to be called by the referee if the player fails to call it upon himself or herself. All players are responsible for knowing the rules of the game.

The referee may request a point be replayed. Referee's decisions are final. Players may ask the referee to replay the point if there is a question regarding the attacking of the ball at the net. All other ball handling or rules calls made by the referee are not to be questioned.

TEAM LEAGUES - Each team may be scheduled to referee and keep score. Failure to do so when scheduled, or failure to make arrangements for a substitute referee/scorekeeper, will result in a forfeit of three wins. If a substitute referee is scheduled to referee, and if that substitute referee fails to show, the team arranging for the substitute will forfeit three wins.

DRAW LEAGUE - Each team (as drawn the prior week) will be scheduled to referee and keep score. Failure to do so when scheduled, or failure to make arrangements for a substitute referee/scorekeeper, will result in a forfeit of 3 points from each player's totals.

RE-SCHEDULED MATCHES

TEAM LEAGUES - Playoff matches must be played on the night they are scheduled. A Round Robin match can only be rescheduled if both teams agree to the reschedule, and agree to a mutually acceptable date and time.

The rescheduled match must be played by the final night of Round Robin play.

To reschedule a match:

Notify a League Director first.

Meet with the captain of the other team and work with the La Mesa Wallyball Club to choose an acceptable date for the rescheduled match.

Officially notify the court at least 24 hours in advance of the canceled match. If this is done, La Mesa Wallyball will not charge for rescheduled court time. Otherwise, payment for the court time for the rescheduled match will be the responsibility of the team initiating the reschedule.

Schedule the make-up match with the court.

La Mesa Wallyball is not under any obligation to reschedule a match during prime time play. Time availability for rescheduled matches is solely at the discretion of La Mesa Wallyball.

Notify the team that was scheduled to referee the "canceled" match that the match has been rescheduled. If that team cannot provide a referee for the rescheduled match, both teams may agree on another referee.

If a referee cannot be secured, the teams may keep their own scores. An Official Score Sheet must be turned in to LMRC or to a League Director in order for the match to count.

DRAW LEAGUES - Matches may not be rescheduled.

SCORING OF GAMES

ALL LEAGUES - Games will be to 18 points. When one team reaches 15 points, scoring freezes. The team that is behind will gain one point on the next sideout. From that point forward, points can only be scored on a service.

If court time expires before the third game is completed, the team that is ahead when play is halted will be considered the victor in that game. If the teams are tied when play is halted, each team member will receive credit for 1/2 of a win.

Play will be halted by the referee when the front desk clock indicates the end of the allotted hour.

SUBSTITUTES

TEAM LEAGUES - A list of substitutes will be available for those instances when a player cannot make the match. All substitutions will be made from the Official Substitution List. Prior to participating, all substitutes must sign a waiver and present the waiver to a League Director. Substitutes are responsible for refereeing/scorekeeping assignments (if applicable).

In order for the substitute to be able to participate in the playoffs, the substitute must have been on the Official Substitute List for a minimum of 75% of the weeks in the Round Robin portion of the league.

Teams may select substitutes from their Official Substitute List at their level or lower, or they may select a player from another division of lesser skill level. If a player from another team is selected, that player must not be scheduled to play at the time of the substitute match.

Players on teams eliminated from the playoffs, automatically become members of the Official Substitute List for the league in which they participated.

DRAW LEAGUES - Players unable to make their scheduled matches must contact a League Director as early as possible. The League Director will arrange for a substitute for the player.

If a team is not ready to play 20 minutes after the established starting time, that team will forfeit two wins.

If a team is not ready to play 40 minutes after the established starting time, that team will forfeit three wins.
